Countries around the world are scrambling to source rice following a partial ban on exports by India cut global supply by around a fifth.
Global food security is already under threat since Russia ended a deal allowing Ukraine to export wheat and the El Niño weather phenomenon hampered rice production.
Rice prices are skyrocketing and putting the most vulnerable populations in some of the poorest countries at risk. Vietnam’s rice export prices, for example, hit their highest level in 15 years.
Even before the restrictions imposed by India, countries were already buying rice frantically in anticipation of the El Niño phenomenon, creating a supply shortage and a price spike.
