Tony Arbolino and Jake Dixon secure contracts for 2024 MotoGP season: Updates on rider negotiations and team changes

According to information from Motorsport.comthe Marc VDS team, which was negotiating with several candidates for the succession of Tony Arbolino with a view to 2024, finally reached an agreement with the Italian driver last weekend, on the sidelines of the Austrian GP. Likewise, the Aspar team renewed the contract binding it to Jake Dixon.

Moto3 World Vice-Champion in 2020, Tony Arbolino, 23, is currently competing in his third season in the intermediate category and is in second place in the championship. After a very solid start to the season, where we saw him accumulate two victories and six podiums in seven rounds, his results curve lost some steam while Pedro Acosta got back on track. The Spanish phenomenon gleaned 27 points in three Grands Prix and took control of the general classification.

In recent weeks, the name of Arbolino has circulated a lot, the Italian being seen as one of the candidates for a possible arrival in MotoGP. Today, the extension of his agreement with MarcVDS does not completely cancel his chances of racing in the premier class next season, but it complicates things. Thanks to this new agreement, the team led by Marc van der Straten has its back: either it will be able to field one of the most prominent riders in the category next year, or a MotoGP team will have to pay a clause of termination to run Arbolino.

It is now the evolution of the market in the coming weeks that will prove decisive, knowing that there are still a few vacancies to be filled. One of the possible destinations for Arbolino seemed to be the Gresini team, on the Ducati that Fabio Di Giannantonio will probably leave at the end of the season.

Jake Dixon was also cited for this place, while MotoGP promoters are still waiting for an English rider in the premier class to boost TV audiences in Great Britain. But the winner of the Dutch GP preferred to stay in Moto2, where he will keep his place in the Aspar team. Engaged since 2017, he is currently having his best season there, occupying third place overall following his first world success.

Alex Marquez therefore still does not have a teammate for the moment, he who has been confirmed by Gresini for 2024. Ducati also has an official motorcycle to assign following the announcement of the departure of Johann Zarco from Pramac Racing. Logic would have it Marco Bezzecchi obtain this GP24 next year, however everything seems to indicate that the current third in the championship will remain with VR46. If that is the case, “the most real possibility” becomes, according to Ducati, that Franco Morbidelli takes the place left by Johann Zarco at Pramac.
