Don Garber, MLS commissioner, rejected the possibility of the Leagues Cup being played in Mexican territory following multiple complaints from Liga BBVA MX teams regarding the disparity in the tournament.
“Economically it makes sense to contest it here in the United States. It is a great opportunity for Liga MX to be able to give their fans who live in the United States the experience of seeing all of their teams, as opposed to the two or three that come to play in the summer (pre-season games).” assured the manager in statements to AFP.
“So I think there is no reason to consider moving it (the tournament), but, we will take a step back when it’s all over to evaluate it very well,” he added.
WHY NOT PLAY THE LEAGUES CUP IN ROUND-WAY MATCHES IN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES?
For the boss of Major League Soccer, there is a very simple reason to explain why his teams cannot travel to Mexico to play the Leagues Cup in the Liga BBVA MX stadiums.
“I don’t think it should compete with the Concacaf Champions Cup and I think once you start having home and away games it will be a lot like that competition. I am not sure if that is the best for the two Leagues and our Confederation (Concacaf), ”he revealed.
LEAGUES CUP, “A JOINT VENTURE BY MLS AND LIGA MX”
As if that were not enough, Don Garber issued a clear warning to the Liga BBVA MX teams that, like Monterrey through its sports director José Antonio ‘Tato’ Noriega, complained regarding the organization and logistics of the Leagues Cup.
“We worked very hard to make sure our clubs knew that this is a joint venture between the two competitions. We are joint owners of this tournament with Liga MX,” he clarified.
“So if we do things that disparage the tournament, that affects our society. We have to do things that grow the tournament and that benefit us both as partners,” he added.
