Federal Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke is drafting new regulations to ensure that healthcare providers speak the patient’s language well, he said on Monday, in response to the 10,000 foreign doctors practicing their profession being exceeded. Belgium.

There are already laws on the matter, but they might be more conclusive, according to Deputy Prime Minister Vooruit. In June, Frank Vandenbroucke asked his administration to prepare regulatory amendments in order to be able to require knowledge of one of the national languages.

But European regulations must also be taken into account. From then on, it will be only one of the three national languages, and proportionality will also come into play. In other words, not all healthcare providers will be subject to the same language requirements, especially those who have little or no contact with patients.

The Minister also recalls that he has raised the quota of doctors for the second consecutive year. “The federated entities made it known before the summer that they would follow this proposal. I therefore call on them to make the best use of their sub-quota competence in order to train enough general practitioners, psychiatrists, geriatricians and others. In this way, we will be able to eliminate shortages in a number of disciplines“.

The N-VA urged the Minister to act, with regard to Flemish patients admitted to Brussels hospitals. “Flemings cannot be treated in Brussels as second-class citizens or discriminated once morest on the basis of their language“, underlined the Flemish deputy Karl Vanlouwe.
