In the 1800s and later during the great economic crisis in the USA in the first half of the 20th century, the so-called snowball experienced its boom as a sweet cooling off. Known then as “penny sundae”, frozen water was placed in a cup as chopped ice and topped with syrup of your preference and taste. To this day, Snowballs, which originated in Baltimore, can be found in many regions of Maryland.

Tradition meets modern diversity
The traditional varieties Skyline, egg custard and blood orange are popular. But nowadays there are no limits to the variety of tastes. From syrup of all kinds to chocolate sauce and marshmallow topping, the range is colorful and varied. In western Maryland, a portion of soft ice cream is typically added to the chopped ice cream. This variation is called Lollipop.
