The construction crane overturned around 8 a.m. Monday morning at a construction site on the Meulestedekaai near the port of Ghent.

The 30-meter high machine fell on a car and a building under construction. The building was damaged and the car was totally destroyed.

According to information from the Nieuwsblad, workers were lifting a concrete slab around eight o’clock when things went wrong with the remote-controlled crane. “I was standing in my kitchen when it suddenly started shaking,” says neighbour, Bart Vermeiren. “My kitchen cupboard opened up,” he adds.

The Belgian was very surprised by the shock. “Everything shook like an earthquake. It was a scary few seconds. I looked at the ceiling because I was afraid that something else would follow, but following a few seconds, it was fortunately over”, confides Bart once more.

“There was a bit of panic in the street”

As for the parked car, luckily the owner, Gisela, was not in it. She lives two houses from where it happened and was regarding to hit the road once more when the crane fell. “I was going to take my son to a camp, but just before leaving, I heard a loud bang. It was very scary. At first, I thought it happened at the back of our house,” says Gisela.

And when she went to look in the street, she realized that her Peugeot had been completely crushed by the crane. “You don’t know what happens at a time like this. There was a little panic in the street. At the site, the workers were always feverishly looking for someone. He was quickly found. Everyone came out unscathed,” adds Gisela.

Joris Rombaut, Gisela’s companion, is relieved. “Two minutes later and they would have been in the car. The contractor has already come to see us and told us that everything will be fine thanks to the insurance. The most important thing is that no one was injured, ”says Joris.
