AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — A suburban Seattle racetrack was turned into a prehistoric race track over the weekend as more than 200 people competed in inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex costumes.

The 2023 T-Rex World Championships at Emerald Downs — an event that began in 2017 as part of a pest control company’s corporate synergy activity — ended Sunday with a photo finish in which three competitors made it to the goal at almost the same time.

Ocean Kim claimed the title in the 100-yard race following officials agreed that Kim, a native of Kailua, Hawaii, crossed the finish line just ahead of the others. Second place went to Colton Winegar, from Boise, Idaho, who signed up as Deno the Dino. Seth Hirschi of Renton, who entered under the name Rex Ray Machine, finished in third place.

The true Tyrannosaurus rex roamed the planet between 65 and 67 million years ago. Two years ago a study was published in the journal Science in which it is estimated that around 2.5 billion T-Rex lived. Hollywood movies like the “Jurassic Park” franchise have contributed to the public’s fascination with this carnivorous dinosaur.
