Strasbourg (ots) – A documentary is dedicated to the organizational form and the activities of the so-called Reichsbürger, a fast-growing anti-constitutional movement with a focus on Germany. For more than a year, the film author Rainer Fromm accompanied the most important Reich citizen groups and an apparently closely networked anti-state movement on behalf of ZDF/ARTE. “Reichsbürger – Inner views of an extremist movement” will be available on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 9.45 p.m. in the ARTE media library and will be broadcast on TV at the same time.
It is often so-called lateral thinkers, esotericists, right-wing extremists and dropouts who find their way to the Reich citizens. After decades of shadowy existence, more and more people are now following their slogans. Since being observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution from 2016, their number in Germany has more than doubled to 23,000 members in 2023, around 2,100 of whom are considered violent.
In an interview with ARTE, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, put it more concretely: “Recently, for the first time, we have noticed efforts that are actually considering eliminating this state by force of arms.”
The citizens of the Reich fight the state, want to re-establish old empires or demand autonomy. They buy castles, set up their own businesses and flat-sharing communities – counter-societies that declare war on today’s state. Many have good jobs and have never attracted the attention of extremists before.
The documentary “Reich Citizens – Inside Views of an Extremist Movement” (Director: Saskia Wisdom, Author: Rainer Fromm, ZDF/ARTE, Rainer Fromm Film, D 2023, 52 min.) will be available on ARTE- media library arte.tv and will be broadcast simultaneously on ARTE.
