A health expert in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia confirmed that the rate of diabetes in Saudi Arabia has increased by 99% in the last ten years.

Health promotion and health awareness expert, and writer on health and social affairs, Dr. Abdul Rahman Yahya Al-Qahtani, said, according to Sabq newspaper, that Saudi society suffers from overweight and obesity, which represents one of the most serious threats to Vision 2030, as it is the main and first risk factor for death and disability in Saudi Arabia. Every five adults in the Kingdom are overweight or obese, according to a recent report by the World Bank. Health services are also depleted and constitute a huge economic burden on the Kingdom, estimated at more than 72 billion riyals annually, according to Sabq newspaper.

He explained that the Saudi society also suffers from a sharp decrease in the intake of the recommended daily amount of vegetables and fruits, amounting to 93% of adults (15 years and over), compared to 80% of that age group who do not practice sufficient physical activity recommended daily, according to the Global Health Survey. in Saudi Arabia for the year 2019.

He also noted a high increase in the number of cases of diabetes by 99% during one decade in the Kingdom, as 1.4 million cases were recorded in 2009, compared to 2.7 million cases in 2019.
