Genome Sequencing and Surveillance of Covid-19 Variants: Updates and Monitoring by Government

New Delhi: The central government has held a high-level meeting in view of the discovery of new variants of Covid-19 in different parts of the world. The government has demanded that the information of genome sequencing of those who are covid positive be codified and monitored accurately. It was also informed that it should be checked for similarity with newly discovered variants in the world.

Prime Minister’s Private Secretary Dr. PK Mishra informed that since the current covid situation in the country is stable and all the public health centers are taking effective measures once morest it, more vigilance should be taken once morest influenza and respiratory diseases.

According to the Department of Health, the newly reported variants are BA 2.86, EG.5, etc. According to the World Health Organization, EG 5 has been reported in 50 countries and BA 2.86 in 4 countries. In the last one week, 2,96,219 new cases of Covid have been reported in the world. Out of this, 223 cases were reported in India. That is 0.075 percent of the total reported in the world.
