We often hear that it is more difficult to lose weight following 60 years. However, a British study has shown that age does not affect weight loss. This work was published in 2020 in the journal The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Age does not affect weight loss

For the purposes of this research, scientists from the University of Warwick (England) recruited 242 patients suffering from morbid obesity. For several years, the volunteers benefited from personalized follow-up, which included lifestyle changes aimed at promoting weight loss. No surgery was performed during the work.

During the study, researchers compared each participant’s weight loss and decrease in body mass index (BMI). They then found that “age does not influence the success of weight loss”. Lifestyle changes had the same impact on the weight of subjects over 60 and those under 60. The success of weight loss does not depend on age. “Therefore, age per se should not influence clinical decisions regarding patient acceptance into hospital obesity services,” the research authors noted.

Healthy diet and regular physical activity, the keys to weight loss

A balanced diet associated with the practice of regular physical activity is an excellent strategy to promote weight loss. In order to lose weight, you can indulge in different sports such as swimming, running, cycling or even muscle building.

On the food side, we aim for nutrients that do us good such as fibers, lipids or proteins. Regarding the composition of the menus, meals can be prepared containing fruits, vegetables, legumes (lentils, white beans, chickpeas, etc.), whole grains and proteins (poultry, white meat).
