LIMA (AP) — Peruvian singer Susana Baca appeared in Lima as a guest at a concert by Natalia Lafourcade and dedicated one of the Mexican’s best-known songs to the more than 60 victims of the anti-government protests that shook the country half a year ago. .
Baca, a three-time Grammy winner, said the day before following singing “Hasta la raíz” in a duet with Lafourcade that she dedicated the song “to the young people who lost their lives fighting for democracy” amid applause inside a local recreation area belonging to to the Armed Forces.
Between December and March there were dozens of protests demanding the resignation of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. The United Nations later indicated that the police and the military used excessive force when confronting the protesters, mostly indigenous people from the Andes. Official counts indicate that there were 67 deaths -most of them civilians and even minors- and more than 1,900 wounded.

Lafourcade’s concert was the second in Peru following almost six years and in which she also performed the songs from her album “De todas las flores” released in 2022. On August 10, the singer began a tour of South America that included Argentina and Chile . On Thursday she will perform in the Colombian capital.
