Man uses AirTag to counter airlines and retrieve luggage

Every day, the AirTag is increasingly establishing itself as an indispensable accessory for those who travel frequently. We’ve already talked regarding cases of people who recovered bicycles, pets and even cars with the tracker, but no item comes close to suitcases on plane travelwhich was even the case of the Canadian Winston Shitlast week.

According to information from the Daily Hive, Sih’s original plan was to fly from Chicago, in the United States, to Toronto, in Canada, last Monday (8/14), but his trip ended up being canceled at the last minute. A United Airlinesin turn, booked him on another trip at the end of the day and promised to transfer his bag to the correct flight — which did not happen.

Arriving at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, the Canadian soon realized that his bags had not come with him. Sih then contacted both United Airlines and Air Canadawho promised that their luggage would be sent to their residence “in the next few days”.

Turns out… that didn’t happen either. Upon contacting United Airlines once more, Sih was told his bag was already in Toronto, but the AirTag he had placed inside said otherwise. According to the accessory, her belongings remain immovable in Washington.

After a while, United Airlines finally got his suitcase on a flight to Toronto, but instead of that spelling the beginning of the end for this whole mess, things only got worse. Instead of being shipped home, the suitcase was taken off the baggage claim at Pearson Airport and left unattended in the baggage claim for another full day.

Concerned regarding this lack of progress, Sih got back in touch with the airlines involved who, following taking a look at their systems, insisted that the bag was still in Washington and had not been placed on any flights – once more contrary to the location informed by AirTag. That’s when he lost his temper and decided to go to Pearson himself to try to retrieve his suitcase.

There, an Air Canada employee allowed him to accompany him to the airport’s baggage hall to look for his bag. According to Sih himself, this would normally be like “looking for a needle in a haystack”, but the features of AirTag made this task much easier to do.

There are several points where I think airlines might better integrate bags with each other, including more frequent scans, but I’d say AirTags are a necessity if you’re traveling.

In his report, Sih reinforced the importance of accessories such as the AirTag, and claimed to also use the tracker with his backpack, keys and various other bags. He advised other people to do the same thing and also start using trackers with their belongings, even from other brands like Tile.
