Riots in Pakistan over alleged desecration of the Qur’an; Compensation has been announced for those affected
ISLAMABAD: The announcement that Christians who lost their homes in Pakistan following being attacked by a mob for allegedly desecrating the Qur’an will be paid Rs 2 million. The announcement was made by Mohsin Naqvi, a top official of Punjab province, following visiting the incident site. The attackers destroyed several houses and set fire to around 16 mosques. The police informed that the raid is continuing and 160 people are in custody.
The riot took place on Wednesday. A Christian and his friend were attacked by a mob for allegedly desecrating the Quran. The incident took place in Jaranwala, Punjab.
Naqvi convened a cabinet meeting at the mosque burnt in the attack in Jaranwala in the presence of priests to approve compensation for those affected by last week’s attack. Hundreds of people are living outside as their houses have been demolished.
“They are concerned regarding safety. Priest Khalid Mukhtar said the children who witnessed the attack are traumatized. He added that 26 mosques were attacked. The rioters alleged that a Christian and his friend tore pages of the Koran, threw them on the ground and wrote obscenities on them.
Local police chief Mansoor Sadiq said that 160 people have been arrested in the incident and raids are being conducted to nab regarding 450 people who are suspected to be accused. Naqvi announced that all Christians who suffered financial loss in the attack would be paid Rs 2 million within the next 48 hours. He also directed the officials to rebuild all the destroyed mosques.
But Naqvi and the officials visited only one damaged mosque and did not go to the homes of any of the affected people, Mukhtar said. He also demanded that all mosques be rebuilt.
