ALGIERS- The Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, called on Sunday in Algiers, importers of school supplies to move towards local production, highlighting successful experiences in this area.
Kicking off an exhibition of school supplies at the Promenade des Sablettes (Algiers), Mr. Zitouni said that to achieve this objective, the Ministry of Commerce had put in place a “roadmap” providing for the hardening , from next year, conditions for granting authorizations to import school supplies to pave the way for local investment and international partnerships.
“We intend to convert the 155 million dollars intended for the import of school supplies into investments in order to create added value in Algeria”, he declared, recalling that Algeria produced approximately one (1) billion pens per year, which is sufficient, according to him, “to meet the needs of the national market and to export”.
The Minister stressed the need for importers and producers of school supplies to contribute to the success of the 2023/2024 back to school, by reducing prices, inviting them to bring their prices closer to each other.
International paper prices have fallen by 50% and shipping prices have fallen significantly, which should lead to lower prices for school supplies in the local market, he argued.
And to recall that his ministerial department had started very early this year the preparations for the start of the school year, in coordination with the Ministry of National Education, the import authorizations having been granted last March.
In addition, and parallel to the launch of this exhibition, Mr. Zitouni revealed the organization of 83 exhibitions of school supplies through all the wilayas of the country and three (3) regional exhibitions in Algiers, Constantine and Oran to ensure the availability some products.
- Zitouni had met, in early August, producers and importers of school supplies to ensure the availability of these products in anticipation of the start of the school year.
