A young 22-year-old Belgian mountaineer died on Saturday August 11 following a fall in the Swiss mountains of the canton of Schwyz. On Sunday August 12, emergency services were called by other hikers who found the body. “A mountaineer had gotten lost the day before and had fallen,” a police spokesman told our colleagues at The Latest News. “It is not known how far the victim fell, but he died of his injuries. The mountains where the sportsman lost his life culminate with their two summits at over 2,700 meters in altitude and are very popular with climbing lovers.

Evacuation of the body was hampered by a thunderstorm, but around 6.30pm on Sunday evening they managed to transfer the deceased victim to Kaltbach, north of Lucerne. It took until Friday August 18 for the police to announce that the victim had been identified as a 22-year-old Belgian. “The man was not registered as a tourist in the region,” said a police spokesman.
