In Theux, in the ruins of the famous castle of Franchimont, odd year obliges, it was the return of the Franche Foire all this weekend.
All the clubs and associations in Theux rolled up their sleeves to make the show as authentic as possible, as usual. This leap into the past takes the visitor back to the time of Prince Bishop Erard de la Marck. It was he who in the 16th century authorized Franchimont to have a Franche Foire, in other words a market.
Today, the “Monks of Franchimont” make it a point of honor to bring this bygone era to life for the 25,000 spectators present.
Among the 2000 volunteers who participate in the smooth running of the Franche Foire, we find craftsmen such as the blacksmith, the woodcutters, the basket weavers, the shepherds, the market gardeners, but also the guards of the castle, the archers responsible for executing criminals, the Prince Bishop and his court and all the innkeepers who allow everyone to taste the hotpots, soups or wild boar bread of yesteryear without forgetting the cervoise or mead that one pays with esterlins.
