According to WHO, the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHF) causes outbreaks of severe viral hemorrhagic fever. Hemorrhagic fever outbreaks have a case fatality rate of up to 40%.

The virus is mainly transmitted to humans from ticks and farm animals. Human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with blood, secretions, organs or body fluids of infected individuals. There is no vaccine, neither for humans nor for animals.
