The flames reached villages in the region of the port city of Alexandroupoli on Sunday, damaging several houses and agricultural land, local authorities said on Sunday. Firefighters battled the blazes for the second day in a row.

According to the fire brigade, firefighting aircraft and helicopters were used at first light to contain the flames. “It was a very difficult night,” Alexandroupoli Mayor Giannis Zamboukis said on state radio. Eight villages near his town were evacuated. Four people were taken to the hospital with respiratory problems, the mayor of the port city said. Facilities popular with tourists were not in danger.

Again forest fires in Greece: Villages evacuated

The fires broke out on Saturday for unknown reasons and took on large dimensions due to strong winds and the drought that had lasted for weeks. According to the fire department, a total of 46 forest and bush fires broke out nationwide on Saturday.

The Hellenic Civil Service released a map showing Sunday morning that large parts of Greece were at the second-highest level of fire risk. In the coming days, temperatures should be around 39 degrees on the Greek mainland, the weather agency said.
