Vatican City: A phone call from Pope Francis consoled the mother of a 24-year-old who died a few days following attending the World Youth Conference in Lisbon. Luca Ray Sartu, a young man from the small town of Marnate in the northern Italian province of Varese, died of a severe bacterial infection.

Luke’s was a death that saddened the people of that region. The shrine and its premises were thronged with those who had come to attend the funeral service held at the San Hilary Church there on Friday morning. Luca Raimonti, Auxiliary Bishop of Milan, was the main minister at the Mass held in connection with the funeral service.

Following Luca’s passing, his mother received a very unexpected phone call from Pope Francis. The closeness through the loving words of the Holy Father was no small comfort and consolation to their hearts. During the sermon, the bishop said what they had shared with him regarding this. ‘Papa grieved with me and comforted me like my own father. I felt like Papa was crying with me. “I thank the Holy Father from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful and merciful act,” the bishop said, quoting the words of Luke’s mother.

Many young people attended the Mass wearing World Youth Day T-shirts along with family members, friends, acquaintances and civic leaders. The presence of such a huge crowd was a great relief to the grieving family members.
