Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
People’s stories poor turned into capable people happens a lot in real life. This story also happened to Diane Hendricks.
Born into a family of farmers and dairy farmers, he is now one of the richest people in the United States and the world.
Collect Forbes, Diane Hendricks’ total wealth per Friday (18/8) was US$15.6 billion. If the total is in rupiah at an exchange rate of Rp. 15,302 per US dollar, the wealth is Rp. 238.7 trillion.
This wealth makes him the 110th richest person in the world.
So who exactly is Diane Hendericks to make her rich like that?
Citing various sources, Hendricks was born in Wisconsin, USA in 1947 to a family of farmers and dairy farmers.
He grew and developed with his parents in that area. From childhood to adolescence he went through beautifully with his parents and siblings at that time.
Even though he was born as the son of a dairy farmer, he already has a dream; do not want to live forever work like his parents.
“I don’t want to be a farmer, breeder, I also don’t want to marry a farmer,” he was quoted as saying Forbes.
What he dreamed at that time was to work in a blue suit in the city. However, the dream failed.
When he was 17 years old, the beauty of life and his dreams changed. He started having life problems.
It happened because of his first love. The reason is, that first love made her pregnant and have children even though she was only 17 years old.
She had to marry for the sake of her child. Because of that marriage and pregnancy in her teens, it was almost impossible for her to continue her final year of high school education.
But thanks to his determination, the obstacle was successfully overcome. He still finished his studies at home in order to get a diploma.
After getting her diploma, she moved with her husband to Janesville, which is 200 miles from her birthplace. But just 3 years of marriage, his family fell apart.
He eventually divorced. Being a single parent, he must try hard to survive. He desperately looked for work so he might support his son.
Including being a property seller. The job then brought her together with a contractor named Ken Hendricks who eventually became her husband.
Her marriage to Ken then changed the wheels of Diane Hendricks’ life.
After getting married, the newlyweds bought 200 old houses and then rented them out to university students.
The couple’s boarding house business was a success. Until then, following 6 years, she and her husband were looking for new challenges; building supplies business.
Incidentally at that time, there was a building shop that was in trouble so the owner then sold it.
With reckless capital, Diane and her husband finally pledged their assets to the bank to buy the building shop.
He got a US$900 thousand loan which was then used to buy the building shop.
The idea of buying a building shop back then was; buying building materials directly from manufacturers and selling them to contractors like Ken, her husband.
He named the store building with ABC Supply. The strategy worked.
In just 5 years, Diane and her husband’s building materials business was a resounding success. ABC managed to expand its business to 50 stores with US$140 million in sales.
11 years later, the business took off. Sales that were only US $ 140 million grew to US $ 1 billion.
This success did not necessarily make Diane and her husband satisfied. They are trying to expand their business.
Konya Hendricks-Schuh, one of Diane’s seven children, said his parents were aggressive in buying bankrupt companies and fixing them. However, in the midst of his glory, Diane had a disaster. Ken her husband, fell and died in 2007.
Her business rivals had thought the disaster would hit Diane so badly that her business would be abandoned. Understandably, following her husband left, ABC Supply’s business had slumped. Sales fell 7 percent in the 2006-2009 period.
The downturn made Diane had to close ABC Supply. This downturn made Diane’s business rival try to buy ABC Supply.
“They probably thought I was just a woman and therefore would have sold it, but no,” she said.
