Wotschke: “Politics is shredding the generational contract. Looking the other way in the pension sector is no longer acceptable for the younger generation.”
Vienna (OTS) – The so-called “Pension Overshoot Day” takes place on August 19th. In 2023, on August 19th, all income for pensions will be used up. From then on, the state has to plug the pension hole with grants from the budget. From 2022 to 2026, a total of around 140 billion euros will have to be injected into the pension system from the budget. This year alone it is around 26 billion euros.
“The next generation will be burdened with an ever-growing debt backpack. If the federal government wants money to be left for other areas in the future, then sustainable reforms are finally needed,” said Sophie Wotschke, Federal President of JUNOS.
From JUNOS’ point of view, a pension reform should not be delayed any longer. They are once once more calling for a “grandchild-fit” pension reform that includes an automatic pension scheme and the introduction of stock pensions.
“The intergenerational contract is trampled on year following year. Austria finally needs a serious debate regarding a new generation contract,” said JUNOS Federal President Wotschke.
“The incomes of pensioners have risen more sharply than the incomes of those in employment in recent years – this cannot be explained. We finally need a fair pension system so that everyone can afford to live in old age,” concluded the federal chair of Junge NEOS.
