Written by Fatima Yasser Saturday, August 19, 2023 01:00 PM Considered dry eyes It is the most common eye disease, as it affects 6 to 8% of individuals, and the percentage increases among young people, the elderly, and users of contact lenses, as well as following performing LASIK vision correction operations, and the severity of the disease increases in the summer as a result of high temperatures and the use of air conditioners and fans, which leads to To increase the evaporation of tears from the eye, and this causes the patient to feel a burning sensation in the eye and the desire to scratch the eye continuously and severe redness.
Dr. Essam El-Toukhy, professor of ophthalmology at Cairo University, and head of the Department of Eyelid Surgery, the Lacrimal System, and the Dry Eye Unit, explained in an exclusive statement to “The Seventh Day” that if the traditional treatment methods for dry eyes depend on the use of artificial tear drops as an alternative to natural tears, it has been scientifically proven that This is harmful in the long term and does not cure the condition but only a temporary improvement when using eye drops.
And he continued his speech, and therefore very modern methods of treating dehydration appeared, such as:
– Stimulating the natural lacrimal glands to increase secretion by using heat therapy through special devices that work with sound waves and lead to an increase in tear secretion from 50 to 60%.
– Special drops that reduce congestion and inflammation in the tear glands, which helps to increase secretion
– The other modern method is to inject plasma that is taken from the patient’s blood and injected directly into the lacrimal glands using special needles, and this leads to an increase in the secretion of natural tears.
Another method is to preserve natural tears by temporarily closing the tear drainage holes using tear plugs that can be fitted and removed as needed.
