The approach of the new school year also means the return of the lunch box. That said, despite the rising price of food, it is still possible to have healthy lunches at low prices, if there is good “planning and knowledge”, specifies a nutritionist.

Myriam Beaudry, nutritionist and doctoral student in nutrition, reminds us that planning is an essential aspect of having a good, nutritious lunch at low cost. ̧

“You have to give yourself a little push at the planning level. Doing it the same morning, when there are three children around us and we try to figure out what we are going to eat, it will give a stressful morning and a less interesting lunch,” she adds in an interview with VAT News.

Ms. Beaudry encourages parents to cook in advance, on the weekend or on a rainy day, all to save time. Another idea might also be to start cooking a few weeks in advance and freeze the meals.

Planning lunches and meals for the week is a great way to save money and avoid waste. “When you already know what meal to buy, what snack to buy, you can make a clear grocery list. This avoids buying food that will not serve you or that will be wasted”, specifies the doctoral student in nutrition.

What to eat on a busy day?

On busier days, it’s even more important to eat nutritious meals that will sustain you throughout the day. “Snacks are to be preferred or meals that are eaten very cold: a pasta salad, legumes… Granola bars, fruits or nuts,” says Ms. Beaudry.

To save money, Ms. Beaudry advises buying frozen vegetables and fruits, which are less expensive and have the same nutritional value as fresh.
