The authorities are focused on finding the masterminds.
Ecuadorian authorities announced this Friday the arrest of three people allegedly linked to the murder of the mayor of Manta, Agustín Intriago, which occurred on July 23.
At a press conference, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Zapata, said that four people were identified as alleged material authors, and that one of them is an inmate.
One of the detainees is a Dominican national.
The general commander of the Police, Fausto Salinas, indicated that the operation began at dawn this Friday in Manta, Naranjal and in the Litoral Penitentiary.
In the raids, bulletproof vests, a rifle, grenades, more than 100 cartridges and five vehicles were seized.
In addition, eight other people were apprehended for crimes related to arms and substance trafficking, and it is being investigated whether they are related to the murder.
The detainees were transferred to Manta to be placed under the orders of the competent authority, in order to set the date and time of the hearing to formulate charges.
The armed attack occurred when Intriago was on a tour of the 15 de Septiembre neighborhood. Ariana Chancay, a young athlete who was by his side, also died following being hit by bullets.
Freddy Sarzosa, head of the National Directorate for the Investigation of Crimes Against Life (Dinased), explained that one of the detainees posed as a water vendor to guide the alleged hitmen to the place where the mayor was.
The other two are designated as in charge of planning and carrying out all the logistics supply of vehicles and weapons. Regarding the role of the inmate, Salinas indicated that he made calls from jail.
These four are added to a fifth suspect who was apprehended the same day. Now the authorities are concentrating on finding the masterminds.
