In Argentina the suicide is currently the second leading cause of death in adolescents, according to Unicef data, which is why it became a problem that is becoming more and more worrying. According to the latest report from the National Ministry of Health, young people between the ages of 15 and 19 are the ones who are most inclined to these behaviors.

Although it is true that suicide is a multifactorial phenomenon, that is, it does not have a single cause, some risk situations can be observed that predispose an adolescent to suicidal thoughts.

Family problems, bullying, depression, struggles with your sexual identity, the anxiety and the consumption of drugs, among many causes why a teenager comes to a limit situation. Adolescents commonly believe that the best way they have to express their emotions, what they live and feel is their own body. That is why many times they harm themselves, they experience situations of bulimia anorexiaand those who feel trapped in a difficult situation, may feel that they have no choice but to take their own life.

The reality is that they do not want to end their lives, they want to end their problems, and they believe that by killing themselves they will achieve it.

It is essential that as a society we can take preventive measures to be able to observe in advance possible disruptive behaviors. It is necessary take much more into account mental health education in schools, taking into account all the problems that a teenager lives. Schools that work in coexistence spaces together with students tend to have a much better response from them in crisis situations, since for adolescents the peer group is very important.

Why is it so hard to talk regarding mental health?

It is also very valuable that families are present. Many times, some adolescent problems are seen as minor issues because “it’s a boy’s thing” and it really is their life, especially when it comes to relational problems with their peers. There are no “minor” issues. It is transcendental to listen to them, since verbal signals are generally given when faced with suicidal ideation.

On many occasions when someone says “I want to kill myself” or similar phrases, it is not just a teenage drama or a way to attract attention, there is a message that must be heard. That popular belief that says that whoever says it doesn’t do it, whoever is thinking regarding suicide, is generally very desperate and doesn’t want to do it, is not true, so they usually give many previous signs.

Fight once morest bullying

In addition, it is important that spaces are created where these problems can be addressed more openly, without taboos or judgments. You can talk regarding suicide, there is a myth that you can’t say that word, since that can encourage them to do it, and this often causes there to be things that are not spoken openly, that remain under the fog and cannot be mentioned. When something is spoken openly there are fewer possibilities for personal interpretations, and it is healthy to achieve better communication. What is not spoken, it seems that it does not exist, and if it does not exist, it cannot be kept in mind to work on it.

The presence of death in the mind of a teenager is very common and parents should be aware, as in many other issues that surround adolescence such as drugs or alcohol, among others.

Why do the things that happen to us happen to us?

Death causes them concern and curiosity, they investigate and search for images of self-harm on the internet, they share their suffering and seek help on the networks. Many of them they anguish with a self-destructive internal dialogue “nobody loves me, I don’t interest anyone, if I didn’t exist, no one would notice” and they may come to think that the best thing is to take their own life.

Therefore, there are certain signs that must be kept in mind, to prevent critical situations, for example, when a teenager talks a lot regarding suicide or death in general, or they imply that they may not be around for a long time, when they talk regarding hopelessness, when they are seen lonelier, away from their friends, when they listen to songs, draw pictures or write poems or letters regarding death, when They don’t want to go to school (beyond the natural ones) or when another adolescent from their friends or school, practiced or had suicide attempts.

Faced with concern regarding an adolescent at risk, it is convenient to take the matter seriously and speak with them immediately. In the face of any doubt, or in the face of disruptive behavior, it is important to seek professional help, TEEN SUICIDE IS NOT A GAME.
