In Brussels, orange bags – for organic waste – have been compulsory for three months. However, many households complain regarding it: bad smells or the presence of speckles and small animals, especially when it’s hot. For its part, Bruxelles-Propreté gives some tips to avoid inconvenience.

Orange bags have been compulsory in the Brussels Region since 15 May. It has therefore been three months since the people of Brussels have in principle had to dispose of their organic waste there. But in fact, some people experience several inconveniences, such as speckles, maggots or bad odors during hot weather.

With the little beasts and the little flies, when it’s very hot, it’s horror. There are many ! You open the trash can for two minutes – not even a minute – and presto, you see them come out. It’s not hygienic“, comments Marie-Paul Hamaide, resident of a building in Watermael Boitsfort. “Fortunately, I have a terrace! I think of those who don’t have one, it must be horrible…“, she continues.

Currently, the Bruxelles-Propreté regional agency collects orange bins once a week. It is too little, according to Marie-Paul. “This should be minimum twice a week, especially in summer. Because people eat more fruit, the bags are fuller and heavier.

Bruxelles Propreté says it understands the difficulties encountered by the inhabitants of Brussels, but recalls the importance of sorting its waste. The agency even gives some advice to avoid unpleasant surprises:”You can put baking soda in the bottom of the orange container, it will neutralize odors. In the same vein, putting coffee grounds in your trash can works very well. Obviously, you should not use aluminum capsules, but rather traditional coffee. To fight once morest small greens, small maggots or speckles, there are natural repellents that also work very well, such as fresh mint or bay leaf that we find when we cook.“, explains Adel Lassouli, spokesperson for Bruxelles-Propreté.

Neighborhood composts are also a solution. The Brussels Region currently has 210, spread over the 19 municipalities and are managed by theASBL Worms.
