Tragic Shooting Incident in Oupeye: Unraveling the Circumstances

2023-08-18 15:45:00

Confusion and incomprehension, this is what reflects the feeling of the inhabitants of this district of Oupeye, a town located between Liège and Maastricht in the Liège region.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Friday August 18, two shots were heard by several residents of rue du Roi Albert in Oupeye. According to the first information given to us by witnesses to the scene, a police officer fired two bullets into the back of a young man… young man who was riding a quad. The victim is believed to be between 25 and 30 years old.

Very quickly, a crowd formed around the scene because the young man was no longer moving. What happened ? The local authorities were immediately notified, as was the Liège public prosecutor’s office, which dispatched a magistrate to the scene; a doctor was also appointed.

A youth from Oupeye

According to the first elements that might be confirmed to us, it was following a check that the incident occurred. The young man, who was riding a quad, allegedly refused to comply… and did not hesitate to rush towards the policeman, injuring him in the process.

His colleague, a direct witness of the scene, would then have fired in the direction of the pilot in order to stop the race of the latter…

Many street residents heard the shots and came out of their homes to film the arrival of numerous police cars, parked near the scene. The tension on the spot is, one imagines, palpable.

The firefighters, the SMUR were, at the time of writing these lines, on site. The prosecution, as well as the mayor of Oupeye, Serge Fillot, also descended on the scene. Around 5:10 p.m., a doctor attended the scene. A few minutes later, the body of the deceased victim was covered.

For his part, the policeman struck by the quad was transported, injured, to the hospital.

An investigation is opened. It should shed light on the exact circumstances that led to this tragedy.

Facts that remind others

These facts are obviously reminiscent of recent events in France. Last June, in fact, France learned of the death of young Nahel (17) in Nanterre. Following a traffic check that went wrong, the young man was shot dead by a policeman.

Since then, France has been the scene of violent clashes between young people and police.
