An Englishwoman who claimed to raise funds to save animals from bushfires in Australia has been sentenced to 16 months in prison following using donations of more than $58,500 to buy hair extensions, among other things.
“Instead of helping the desperate victims of these horrific events, the money has been spent on frivolous and unnecessary luxuries,” police officer Dane said, according to The Independent on Thursday.
Last week, 27-year-old Kerry Palin hit the road to jail for 16 months following pleading guilty to an “appalling” fraud case of misrepresentation, according to the police officer.
In January 2020, the woman had organized a fundraiser supposedly intended to help wildlife in Australia, which was suffering one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history according to environmentalists, continued the British media.
In total, more than three billion animals would have died or been displaced by the brush fires on eleven million hectares.
But instead of donating the £34,000 – the equivalent of more than $58,500 – to charities, the woman is said to have opted instead to donate a total of $20, split between four charities, before indulging herself with the rest .
In particular, she would have spent on hair extensions, a treadmill and a carpet, before going to the police, under pressure from donors who were beginning to doubt her story.
“Palin not only deceived generous and caring individuals, but deprived the victims of the wildfires of thousands of pounds in donations, which would have made a huge difference in their lives,” the policeman continued, according to “The Independent “.
It was at the Crown Court in Peterborough, England, that Kerry Palin was sentenced to 16 months in prison on August 11.
“I urge anyone wishing to donate money to good causes to be vigilant and, when in doubt, to consider donating directly to the charity itself,” he said.
