Business failures: an alarming return to pre-pandemic figures
The main lines
According to the Banque de France, which published its latest data on Thursday August 17, 2023, corporate insolvencies continued to rise in July 2023, dangerously close to pre-pandemic levels. Over the past 12 months, 49,863 companies have declared bankruptcy, compared to 51,145 in 2019.
Micro-enterprises: a ray of hope
By detailing these figures, a distinction emerges. Micro-enterprises seem to be holding up better with 45,853 failures over the past 12 months, compared to 48,702 in 2019. However, for the other categories, the situation is less rosy.
Sectors most affected by failures
The hotel and catering industry on the front line
The hotel and catering industry is the most affected sector, with a 69.7% increase in business insolvencies compared to July of the previous year. This sector, which had benefited from substantial aid during the crisis, is seeing certain companies, having opted for take-out sales during the pandemic, go out of business.
The struggling industry
Despite the government’s efforts to prioritize reindustrialization, the industrial sector is not spared, posting a 52.7% increase in insolvencies over one year.
Mid-size companies and large groups
A disturbing finding
Mid-size companies and large groups are not left out. The number of failures over the last 12 months amounted to 56, compared to 27 for the year 2019.
SMEs and VSEs in distress
Very small businesses (TPE) with less than 10 employees have seen 2,443 failures in the last 12 monthscompared to 1,527 in 2019. Companies with between 10 and 49 employees recorded 1,147 insolvencies, compared to 651 before the crisis.
