Spotting Dementia Early: Eyes as a Window to the Brain – Recognizing the Warning Signs

2023-08-18 04:12:24

The eyes are often described as windows to the soul, but experts have discovered that they can also be a window to the brain, as some of the signs that appear in them may be an alert to the risk of dementia.

Dementia is one of the leading causes of death globally, with 1.8 million people lost to the disease in 2019.

Diagnosing the condition early gives people the best chance of controlling the disease and relieving symptoms.

Previous studies have found that conditions such as fatigue, hearing loss, and sleep disturbances can all predict the risk of developing the condition.

Jorn Slot Jorgensen, an ophthalmologist, warned of the four signs of dementia that you can spot in the eye.

“In some cases these signs may be subtle and may not be immediately recognizable, however in other cases they may become noticeable enough,” he said, recommending watching for the following symptoms:

changes in vision

Individuals with dementia may have difficulty with visual perception, including difficulty judging distances or identifying colors and contrasts.

Difficulty reading or writing

Dementia can also lead to problems with reading comprehension, writing coherently, or understanding symbols and numbers.

visual hallucinations

Some people with dementia may experience visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not there).

Visual memory impairment

Recalling faces, places, or objects may also become challenging for individuals with dementia.

If you notice any warning signs in the eye it is essential to take immediate action and speak to your GP.

Other signs of the condition include:

memory loss. Difficulty concentrating. Difficulty following a conversation or finding the right word. Mood changes.
