ATLANTA / WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Former US President Donald Trump has canceled his press conference announced for Monday. His lawyers would prefer to use the alleged evidence of voter fraud in the US state of Georgia in the 2020 presidential election in court, Trump wrote on Thursday evening (local time) on the platform Truth Social, which he co-founded. “Therefore, the press conference is no longer necessary!”

For his part, Trump was recently charged in Georgia in connection with attempted voter fraud. A jury ruled that Trump should stand trial for his attempts to influence the outcome of the presidential election there almost three years ago. 18 other people have been charged with him. Trump announced the press conference earlier this week and said he wanted to expose alleged electoral fraud in Georgia that helped Democrat Joe Biden get into the White House.

Neither Trump nor his attorneys have presented evidence to support their allegations of voter fraud. Dozens of lawsuits brought by the Trump camp were dismissed following the election by courts across the country, including the US Supreme Court. The US broadcaster ABC reported that Trump’s lawyers had advised the 77-year-old to better cancel the press conference for legal reasons./nau/DP/mis
