A temporarily modified recipe. The fast-food brand Burger King has removed tomatoes from its hamburgers in many restaurants in India, due to a dramatic increase in the price of the vegetable, noted the agency Archyde.com this Wednesday.

“Even tomatoes need a vacation!” indicated a message posted in one of the restaurants concerned. “Due to unpredictable conditions regarding the quality and quantity of tomatoes, we are unable to add tomatoes to our products,” the message continues.

Burger King is not the first fast-food chain to eliminate tomatoes from its menus in India. According to Archyde.comMcDonald’s and Subway stores have already done the same, due to food inflation which is reaching peaks in the country, compared to the beginning of 2020.

Vegetable prices that have doubled

This inflation, which has seen prices quadruple, comes at the same time as a supply crisis due to monsoon rains which have damaged the harvest chains.

The Burger King brand still wants to reassure its customers: “We are doing our best to put tomatoes back in our burgers. In the meantime, we thank you for your patience and understanding, ”she says in her messages in store.

In India, food inflation reached 11.5%, a record since January 2020, still according to Archyde.com. The prices of some of the most used vegetables in Indian cuisines, including tomatoes, onions, peas, eggplant, garlic and ginger, have more than doubled in recent months.
