The African Union rejects the idea of a military intervention in Niger and therefore dissociates itself from the position of ECOWAS, report several sources. Since the putschists’ coup, Dakar, Abuja and Yamoussoukro have been considering the military option.

While the option of military intervention is still on the table of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union would have opted for a categorical rejection of the use of force to restore the situation in Niger.

According to information from the investigative media Africa Intelligence, during an emergency meeting on August 14 to decide on the settlement of the internal conflict in Niger, the African Union would have dissociated itself from the ambient warmongering advocated by ECOWAS. Information also reported by Le Monde, which describes a meeting “tense”, “endless”, “more than ten hours”, citing diplomats. The organization was to formalize its position on August 16.

Since the putschists’ coup on July 26 in Niamey, ECOWAS has been considering military action, claiming to favor the diplomatic route, but having announced on August 10 the deployment of its “standby force”, without further details. However, within the Member States themselves, positions diverge.
The bloc has already been amputated by several of its members following the suspension of Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea at the hands of the insurgent military. Apart from Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria, the other countries avoid commenting, reports Le Monde.
