Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, a close relative of Giorgia Meloni, condemned them on Thursday “lucubrations” of an active general, who in a book affirms among other things that homosexuals are not “not normal”. “General Vannacci has expressed opinions which discredit the army (…) and the constitution”, castigated in a press release the Minister of Defense. Guido Crosetto “will initiate the planned disciplinary procedure”, he specified. The staff also declared that it had not been “informed of the contents of the book, which has never been subject to authorization by the military hierarchy”.

In his self-published book titled The world upside down (“the world upside down”), released on August 10, Roberto Vannacci, 54, former head of an elite corps of paratroopers and currently head of the Military Geographical Institute, presents himself as “an heir of Julius Caesar”. During his career spent mainly in the field, General Vannacci was stationed in Somalia, Rwanda, Afghanistan and Libya.

Fears for the respect of human rights

“Dear homosexuals, you are not normal, make up your mind” is the sentence of his book most quoted by the media. He also denounces “questionable rules of inclusion and tolerance imposed by minorities”. He violently attacks black volleyball player Paola Enogu, who plays in the Italian team: “Paola Enogu is of Italian nationality, but it is obvious that her features do not represent Italianness. »

These positions sparked a wave of indignant reactions on the left, while right-wing and far-right parliamentarians remained silent. “General Vannucci’s racist and homophobic words and positions blatantly contradict the constitutional values and democratic principles of the Republic”commented Piero Fassino, deputy of the Democratic Party (center left) and vice-president of the defense committee, quoted by the agency AGI.

The coming to power in 2022 of Giorgia Meloni, leader of the post-fascist party Fratelli d’Italia, had raised fears among her European neighbors, in France for example, concerning respect for human rights.
