France will experience a new summer hot spell in the coming days, with temperatures locally exceeding 40 degrees, forecasters warned Thursday, a strong heat already present on the Mediterranean rim, as in Spain.

This episode of heat, with a peak likely on Tuesday or next Wednesday, might be the most intense of the summer in France and one of the latest ever recorded during the summer season. The government announced that it would convene a crisis unit on Thursday.

Seven departments are already on heatwave orange vigilance, which will be joined by twelve others on Friday, in a large part of the south and east of the country, according to the Météo-France institute.

From the weekend, the 40 degrees might be crossed in the south, with peaks at 41 degrees locally, said Thursday Christelle Robert, forecaster at Météo-France, during a telephone point.

The heat should then rise towards the north, with 35 degrees expected for example in the Paris region, and should extend towards Germany.

Further south, the mercury is already breaking records. Tuesday, it was 49.5 degrees in the Turkish city of Saricakaya, unheard of in the country.

In Spain, the 44 degree mark was regularly exceeded last week, especially in Andalusia. Temperatures above 40 degrees are expected in the coming days, especially in the east of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands.

In Madrid, fans, umbrellas and regular refreshments at public fountains remain in order, while the terraces with misters fill up during the hottest hours.
