Bank of Ireland customers were able to withdraw money from ATMs for free for hours. The police were deployed following the news spread on social media. Due to an IT error, Bank of Ireland customers were able to withdraw money from ATMs for free, but the problem has since been fixed, bank officials said. According to the Irish media, the bank’s customers might withdraw up to 1,000 euros more than their account balance on Tuesday. The news immediately spread on social media, causing long queues at ATMs across the country. A man queuing in Dublin told the Irish Times that he found out regarding the problem online. “I don’t know if I’ll get away with it, but it’s worth a try,” he declared. The error apparently also affected ATMs, the bank’s online portal and the mobile application. Even customers with no money and low account balances had access to 1,000 euros, which might be transferred anywhere via the bank’s app. Police were deployed in some parts of the country to maintain order, although a police spokesman said no riots broke out. The bank, however, said it had contacted the authorities but had not asked for police to be stationed near its ATMs. By Wednesday morning, the bank announced that the error had been corrected and warned its customers that the transactions would be charged to their accounts. “These transfers and withdrawals are posted to the customers’ accounts today,” the creditor said. According to some experts, the incident showed that banks still have tragic IT systems.
