2023-08-16 16:38:46

If you’re looking for an opinion from someone who’s tested the Flip 5 to the core and isn’t biased by brand, you’ve come to the right place. This review of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 shows where the manufacturer needs to improve on its foldable smartphone. There are also many good points in the new smartphone, I compared it with the Razr 40 Ultra from Motorola and finally I analyze the price range that I think is fair to pay for the product.

cameras

In the Galaxy Z Flip 5 we have a dual set of cameras, 12MP as the main sensor, optically stabilized and another 12MP sensor with an ultrawide lens. As for the selfie camera, we have 10MP. This set is capable of recording 4K video at 60FPS on all sensors. With the screen closed, you’ll have to do a trick to get 60FPS, the video below shows how:

Most flip smartphones come with dual cameras due to limited space, but we were expecting at least some subtle improvements. The current set is identical to the Flip 4.

See the photo gallery below:

In daytime photos we have the same consistency as other Samsung smartphones. If you know the brand you will know that are photos with high sharpness, contrasted and vibrant colors and finishing ready for social networks.

The videos are overall good. Samsung says it’s using AI to improve video quality in low light, and I believe so, some videos I took for low light testing did well.

Flip in L mode

It’s cool to use the Flip in L mode to capture photos and videos. You can fold the phone into an L shape and place it on a table and you’ll have instant tripod and hands-free video capture.

Flip 5 on the table, folded up as a tripod

You can hold it up camcorder style, or move the image preview to the bottom half of the screen like an old fashioned dual-lens reflex camera and capture point-and-shoot style.

Concluding the cameras, I think Samsung needs to tone down the vibration a bit in low light images, the colors are exaggerated.

Battery

Now let’s talk a little regarding the battery, with a capacity of 3,700mAh the Z Flip 5 has grown 400mAh compared to its predecessor. In the Galaxy Z Flip 5 battery test at Oficina da Net, where we put the smartphone in seven different scenarios during the period of 7h45min to see if it can handle all that screen time. The idea is to simulate heavy daily use, if at the end of the test it arrives with battery, it is considered a good result.

O Galaxy Z Flip 5 did not complete the entire period, consumed 100% and made 7h25min of screen time. A result that guaranteed him the 56th position in the battery ranking, where we have already analyzed more than 60 smartphones. That is, certainly if you use the cell phone with enough intensity, you will not reach the end of the day with battery left.

His charging time, which left me embarrassed, was 2h04min to complete the charge from 0 to 100%, with the 33W charger that comes in the box. It has the ability to charge wirelessly too, much slower, it’s true, but induction charging is that process, leave it standing there charging without straining the battery.

Samsung in 2023 left something to be desired in terms of fast charging. It might be that she decided to do this on purpose, following all, fast charging can often affect battery life. Following people’s habit of charging while sleeping, it’s not even a problem. The fact is that competitors, including the Razr 40 Ultra, deliver much faster charging.

hardware and performance

In hardware we have the best, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, there are 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. This set performed very well in our benchmark tests as well as our gaming tests.

AnTuTu

In AnTuTu, by far the most famous on the internet and which measures the cell phone’s capacity in various activities, from video renderings to QRCode reading. It simulates general usage and ultimately generates a score. In this stage, the Z Flip 5 reached an average of 1,301,232 – 1st position, ranking ahead of the S23 Ultra and the Razr 40 Ultra itself. This was AnTuTu’s record number of smartphones tested here at Oficina da Net.

CPU Throttling

CPU Throttling is the main processor tester, it pushes it to maximum during the constant period of 15 minutes. It is in this test that we can see how much the processor suffers to remain constant and better, it is here that we see how much the manufacturer has worked on the heat dissipation of the smartphone, because if it heats up, the processor lowers the frequency and loses firepower. It is this reduction in frequency and loss of firepower that we call Throttling.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 suffered, in the three consecutive tests, the Maximum score was 362,263, the average 260,934 and the minimum 220,258, heating 17ºC during this period of tests.

What happens here is something fundamental to analyze, the maximum score cannot be so far from the average, it is in these cases that we see the bad heat management of the smartphone, but it is something that we can mitigate in folding cell phones, there is little internal space for do this dissipation properly. Therefore, anyone using the Flip 5 or even the Razr 40 Ultra will have problems with high-intensity activities, such as games and video recording.

COD Mobile

Call Of Duty Mobile ran very well, but something strange happened during the game: a visual bug. It might be hard to tell in the footage, but there are lots of blue spots on the ground, probably where there would be light and shadow effects. It’s probably a simple bug that will be resolved as soon as this video goes live, but it’s interesting to comment on this unprecedented fact. Anyway, the Flip took an average of 60 FPS, with 99% stability and an autonomy of 4:50h of battery life.

Fortnite

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is to be congratulated, as this was one of the best Fortnite performances that has ever passed through our channel. The average frame rate was 60, with a minimum of 54, all this with the graphics at maximum maximum, sparing no effort.

Genshin Impact

We are noticing a pattern in Genshin, as both the Flip and the Razr disappoint in this heavy game. Flip averaged 40 FPS at 98% stability and 4:00h of battery life with graphics at max.

Design and Construction

Tela externa Flip 5

Regarding the construction of the device, we have improvements over the Flip 4, obviously the external screen is the main visible change. Now much bigger, its main objective is to answer messages and see notifications without the need to open the smartphone and use the main screen, another feature is to use the camera and see what is being photographed or recorded in real time.

Using the Flip 5 with the screen open

The Flip 5 has a very beautiful design, the more square and flattened corners, coated in polished metal make the product really with features of a premium device. It’s a nice product to have in your hands, its footprint is satisfactory.

In terms of protection, we have IPX8, that is, it is protected once morest water, but not dust. Dust on foldable smartphones will always be a problem, especially in the middle of the folds. The external screen has Gorilla Glass Victus protection, the internal one has a film, which is not removable.

Bodies

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Body internal

Speaking of screen, let’s go to its specifications and quality. The internal one measures 6.7″, Dynamic AMOLED 2x, has extended FULLHD resolution, 120Hz refresh rate. The screen ratio is 22:9, following all it is more stretched.

Body External Galaxy Z Flip 5

The external screen measures 3.4″, Super AMOLED technology with only 60Hz of refresh and 720p resolution (720×748).

The quality of the screens are very good, the technology standard that Samsung employs in its displays is fantastic, it doesn’t get any better than OLED at 120 Hz. The contrasts are excellent and the screen is very responsive. Another highlight is the edges, which are very reduced on the Flip’s internal screen.

Prices and competitors

Prices can scare, the cheapest version arrived costing BRL 7999. The current price is in the range of BRL 7199, still high. When I compared the Flip 5 with the Razr 40 Ultra, I said that for 7 thousand reais you can’t buy a foldable smartphone, unless you have a real need or really like this type of product.

I asked in the Youtube community if someone with 7 thousand reais would buy a foldable (Flip 5 or Razr 40 Ultra) or would choose an iPhone 14 Pro, the choice of users was 62% for the Apple smartphone.

Which cell phone would you buy?

We know that to build a foldable smartphone, with all this capacity, is not cheap, it requires a lot of engineering, on the other hand iPhones are expensive like that by default, something that the market has accepted, many arguments regarding the resale of iPhones that they remain in price high, is a point to be discussed. But the fact here is that people wouldn’t pick up a foldable Android at this price if they had the ability to buy one.

I do not believe that these products have a lot of sales, this is another reason for manufacturers to raise prices, if they are not going to sell a lot, that is expensive, to make a profit in a few units.

Worth to buy?

If you have a Flip-style folding and are thinking of switching to the new one, only do so if you have the model 3 down. There weren’t that many improvements. What needs to be improved on these smartphones is battery life, there is still a lot to be done to make them last longer. I know it’s complicated to make something better that is already in production, the smartphone is small, the central hinge hinders the whole battery design, but I expected more from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in this regard. I saw it on the S23 Ultra with battery left over, on the Flip 5 this doesn’t happen.

The price that I think is fair to pay for this type of product is below R$5000, bordering between R$4200 and R$5000, something that we can wait around 6 months to happen, since the past Flips devalued this average.
