Does your child have a habit of doodling rather than doing homework or listening to their teacher? He seems to be “over the moon” and retain nothing of the material? He may have difficulty concentrating. Here’s how you can help!
Allow him to expend his energy: your child may need to let off steam a bit to achieve an appropriate level of calm for homework time. Give him a few minutes (15, for example) to play, move and spend his energy.
Help him develop his concentration: where possible, invite your child to play games or engage in activities that help develop concentration. Block constructions, puzzles, painting and memory games are some good ideas.
Eliminate sources of distraction: your child needs to be able to focus their full attention on the work at hand. During homework and lessons, remember to turn off the television, turn off the computer, put the tablet or cell phone aside and reduce the noise level.
Use suitable accessories: some children are better able to focus on a task when they can handle a stress ball in class or wear noise-canceling headphones during homework, for example. Do some experimentation and encourage the use of items that work.
If your child has severe concentration difficulties and none of the techniques work, consult a specialist who will be able to find the cause of the problem and guide you towards the best strategies to adopt.
