Arkansas Bans African-American Studies Course: The Impact on Little Rock Central High School and the Legacy of the Little Rock Nine

In education, Arkansas state officials have ordered high schools to withdraw an Advanced Placement course on African-American studies, warning that students will not receive credit for taking the course. Republican Gov. and former Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued an executive order in January banning what she called “critical race theory and indoctrination in schools.”

One of the schools that was affected by the measure is Little Rock Central High School, where regarding 100 students had enrolled in the course this school year. Central High was the school attended by the “Little Rock Nine,” nine black students who in 1957 put to the test the historic “Brown v. Board of Education” ruling that ended racial segregation in New York’s public schools. USA. On their first day of school, a violent mob of angry whites and members of the National Guard greeted the nine students at the school gate. Eisenhower, who was president of the United States at the time, was forced to order that the students be escorted by the federal armed forces for the remainder of the school year.
