The Impact of Loneliness on Heart Health: A Scientific Fact Revealed

Many popular expressions may be a scientific fact, including the term (breaking of the heart) in which we express extreme sadness, which does not seem to be just a metaphorical expression but rather a scientific fact.

A study conducted in the United States earlier and published by the European Heart Journal revealed that a person’s feeling of loneliness may increase the risk of heart disease, and may cause narrowing or even blockage of the blood vessels that feed the heart, which reveals the close relationship of the psychological state with heart disease.

Consultant cardiologist and former dean of the Heart Institute in Egypt, Jamal Shaaban, explains that this study indicated that married people are less likely to suffer heart attacks than others, and when an injury occurs, they are less likely to suffer complications from those crises compared to unmarried people.

Jamal Shaaban says in his interview with “Sky News Arabia” that the life partner is the explanation, because when there is a psychological crisis and a problem in life, you find someone who relieves you of its impact.

The heart consultant explained the reasons why having a partner in life is an important factor for heart health:

Many heart attacks occur because of anger, worries or life problems, and these pressures are less when divided by two instead of one. The presence of a partner in life can be a means of first aid or early rescue, as he may notice a symptom in you and hasten to call for an ambulance. The partner has an important role in alerting you to the presence of a health symptom, such as a change in food pattern, change in shape, breathing method, color, or weight loss, which may indicate a heart problem. When moving and seeking health advice early, the situation may be saved before Worsening heart attack. Staying within a social framework is better than isolation and solitude, as long as there is the ability to coexist. Loneliness is more harmful to the heart than the partner, even if there is difficulty in understanding with him, and of course if the marriage is happy, this is much better.

The heart and the brain.. and the strong connection

With regard to the role of grief affecting the state of heart health, Jamal Shaaban stated that:

Sadness actually breaks the heart, and it is a scientific fact, not a metaphor or a rhetorical expression. Sadness leads to the emission of a storm of grief and anger hormones, which leads to the secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which causes severe contraction of the coronary artery, resulting in a heart attack. Sadness can also lead to paralysis in a part of the heart muscle and stretching of the rest of the muscle, and the person suffers from symptoms similar to angina pectoris, and the condition is diagnosed as a clot in the coronary artery, but from God’s mercy, these cases are recoverable, and when catheterization is performed, the artery responds and opens without the need for stents And the muscle may recover with drug treatment. We always recommend seeking help from the pressures of life through patience and prayer, marriage and good company, upholding ties of kinship, consoling the weak, and engaging in collective social work that reflects well on people, all of which are factors that can have an impact on the heart and protect it from its organic crises.

Social distancing increases heart disease

The former dean of the Heart Institute points out that when the Corona epidemic spread, the number of people with heart attacks increased for two reasons. The first is that Covid 19 is a disease related to the heart and blood vessels. Stickiness in the coronary arteries, as recoveries from Corona were found to have a rapid heartbeat, palpitations, or an imbalance in the heart’s electricity, or clots and other conditions.

As for the second factor that Shaaban stresses, it is the cases of psychological pressure, isolation and solitude that accompanied social distancing, and had bad effects, both on the elderly who did not have contact with their surroundings, and cases of heart diseases that needed someone to share with them the problems of the disease and the pressures of life, and follow up with them. Taking medications, and encouraging them to seek diagnosis and treatment.
