Umm Maryam, a 69-year-old Tunisian, suffers from chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and osteoporosis, in addition to frequent strokes in the brain.

As a result of not taking medicines and medical drugs on time, her condition worsened, and complications of the disease appeared, threatening her life.

The problem is that the circumstances of her daughter Maryam (her only breadwinner) do not allow her to afford the treatment costs, which amount to 20,336 dirhams.

The patient’s daughter appealed to those with white hands to extend a helping hand to her, and to help her manage the cost of treatment so that her mother’s life would not be endangered.

Maryam told Emirates Today that her mother’s suffering with the disease appeared at the beginning of 2016, as she developed pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints, and a sharp rise in blood pressure, which necessitated taking her to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City Hospital in Abu Dhabi, where doctors were able to Control over her health condition, and set a treatment program for her, and stressed the need for her to take medicines regularly, and to conduct periodic examinations and analyzes.

Maryam, who is the only breadwinner for her family consisting of her parents, her husband (unemployed), and a three-year-old girl, added that her father worked for more than 20 years in one of the sectors, and decided to dispense with his services due to his old age, and since that time their lives have turned upside down. On the heels – as she says – the money he collected during his work ran out, and her monthly salary (7,000 dirhams) became the only income they depended on to meet the needs of family members, including housing rent and a bank loan.

She said, “I can no longer afford the costs of medicines and medical drugs that my mother needs, as a result of our increasing household needs.”

She added that her mother’s health condition had deteriorated significantly due to her irregularity in taking medications and medical follow-up, and she began to feel constant fatigue and the exacerbation of her illness.

She also confirmed that she had to take her mother once more to the emergency department in the hospital, and following the specialist doctor examined her, he requested laboratory tests and analyzes.

The results of the examinations showed that she suffers from multiple strokes in the brain, and a sharp rise in blood pressure, which threatens her life.

Maryam continued her speech: “My mother stayed in Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City Hospital for a week, receiving the necessary treatment and medical care.

She indicated that the doctor allowed her to be discharged from the hospital following her health condition improved and advised her to regularly take medications at the specified times and to follow a healthy diet, while committing to conducting regular medical examinations.

Maryam continued, in a tone full of sadness: “I cannot save my mother’s life from danger. She is in dire need of her medicines, but I cannot provide them for her.”

She appealed to good people and people with merciful hearts to help her secure 20,336 dirhams so that her condition would not worsen and reach the point of no return.
