Measles is an acute infectious disease, the distinctive features of which are a typical rash and damage to the conjunctiva of the eyes and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The disease is usually transmitted by direct contact and airborne droplets. The virus infects the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body.

Clinical picture: The first sign of measles is usually a significant increase in body temperature, sometimes up to 39-40°C, which occurs approximately 10-12 days following exposure to the virus and lasts 4 to 7 days. At this initial stage, a runny nose, cough, redness of the eyes and watery eyes, as well as small white spots on the inside of the cheeks, may appear. After a few days, a rash appears, usually on the face and upper neck. After regarding 3 days, the rash spreads throughout the body and eventually appears on the arms and legs. It lasts 5-6 days and then disappears. On average, the rash appears 14 days (7 to 18 days) following the virus enters the body. Most measles deaths are due to complications associated with the disease.

The most common complications of measles develop in children under 5 years of age. The most serious include blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea and associated dehydration, inflammation of the middle ear (with possible spread to the inner ear), and severe respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia. Unvaccinated young children and unvaccinated pregnant women are at high risk of measles and complications, including death.

Rospotrebnadzor calls immunization among the most effective measles prevention measures. At present, the National Immunization Schedule of the Russian Federation provides for 2-fold immunization once morest measles in children aged 12 months and 6 years. In the foci of infection, all persons who have had contact with the sick person, without age restrictions, who have not been ill before, have not been vaccinated or have been vaccinated once, are vaccinated.
