Being unable to go to the doctor alone. Ask your child to write a note to his teacher himself. Tick the wrong box of an administrative document. So many situations that Maryem Labzai was faced with on a daily basis. In 2017, freshly divorced and mother of two young children (then aged one and six), she might no longer count on her ex-husband to compensate for her lack of knowledge of French. Yet very sociable, a deep feeling of isolation invades him. “I didn’t dare go out alone, I stayed at home,” recalls Maryem when we meet her at the premises of the Atelier des petits pas, located in Schaerbeek. This isolation will last several years before she finds the courage to start learning a new language at the age of 36, ten years following her arrival in Belgium.
