For the surprise team KI Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands, the dream of the Champions League is over for the time being.
The team, which consists almost exclusively of semi-professionals and already eliminated Ferencvaros (HUN) and Hacken (SWE) in the qualification for the premier class, has to admit defeat to the Norwegian champions Molde 0:2 following extra time. The underdogs won the first leg 2-1.
For the Faroe Islands team it is nonetheless the biggest success in the club’s history and for North Island football in 30 years. By reaching the 3rd qualifying round for the Champions League, the team has secured at least participation in the group stage of the Conference League.
This is the first Faroese club to take part in the group stage of a major European club competition. In addition, Klaksvik, a men’s team from the Sheep Islands, has been represented in the finals of the European Cup for 30 years. HB Torshavn last made it to the finals of the now-defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1993.
For Klaksvik, the European Cup journey continues in the playoffs for the Europa League. At least the Conference League group stage can no longer be taken from the Faroese.
