Year following year, dentists deal with root canals, often to the chagrin of the patients. Of the approximately 15 million treatments, regarding 20 percent fail, i.e. three million. The reason: Remnants of bacteria persist in the tiny dentine tubules that run through the vital dentin of the teeth. The usual antibacterial essences usually do not reach into the fine tubes.
However, scientists are now opening up new possibilities. Actively controlled nanorobots, so-called nanobots, can penetrate the root canals during normal dental treatment and disinfect them.
