The gradual closure of pediatric emergency beds in Medellín now has the San Vicente Fundación Children’s Hospital exceeding its capacity limits. The situation, which might lead to a collapse, occurs due to a lack of beds and personnel.

The institution was in charge of issuing the alert. Through a statement, it was specified that the 14 pediatric stretchers in the emergency service are already occupied and that this responds, in part, to the closure of this type of service in the city.

“The recent situation, given the closure of other pediatric services in the city, has exceeded both our installed capacity and our human capacity for timely and safe patient care,” they said from the hospital.

And they added, in this sense, that the recommendation to follow in case of registering minors with illnesses at home is to exhaust the primary services of other entities before going to this highly complex center. That way the system might be oxygenated.

This was stated by the entity: “We invite the general community to consult their EPS and Primary Care Units in the event of mild symptoms that do not require specialized care, and thus allow children who require highly complex care to access the institution and be dealt with in a timely manner.”

And it is that the part that this medical center shares is not a different sign of a structural decision: in the department 988 beds have been closed to care for the child population in the last 15 years. That is the inventory of the associations that denounce the progressive closure of these services.

The reduction, as reported by EL COLOMBIANO, is equivalent to 25% of those that were active at the end of the last decade. Just last Tuesday, the University IPS announced the “temporary suspension” of the Emergency and Pediatric Hospitalization service.

The explanation given by the institution is that “the hospital is very focused on the care of the elderly and the pediatric service is very small, we only have emergencies and basic hospitalization with very few beds, which does not allow us to provide a comprehensive response to the patients that require high complexity such as surgeries, CSU and ICU, then patients must always be transferred”.
