The renovation works of the Vilvoorde viaduct have started. Traffic will be disrupted on the inner ring of Brussels from Wednesday. The large-scale works will last eight years and will be completed in 2031.
The asphalt, the steel load-bearing structure on which the concrete slab rests, the paint containing asbestos on the load-bearing structure, the guardrails and the lighting must be renovated. A new concrete slab will also need to be laid under the asphalt.
The objective is to maintain traffic on the viaduct as much as possible since it is a very important axis, both for national and international traffic. It was therefore decided to carry out the work in several stages. During each phase, only part of the bridge will be unavailable. Traffic can then continue on the other lanes, where the speed will be reduced to 50 km/h.
The renovation will make it possible to open a fourth lane on the viaduct, in each direction. The cost of the project is estimated at 435 million euros. In 2019, during a first study, the project was still estimated at 100 million euros.
