Carbon dioxide is not only responsible for global warming, it also plays a role in volcanic eruptions due to its accumulation in magma.
At least that’s what a new study on volcanic explosions by American researchers and published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” reveals.
The conclusions of this study might make it possible to better anticipate the volcanic risks, reported, Sunday, the magazine “Geo” which quotes experts who are alarmed on the fact that a probability that an eruption of great magnitudes during the XXIst century is underestimated.
With regard to volcanic eruptions, the scientific consensus has hitherto focused on the role of water and magma, the combination of which forms a potentially eruptive chimney that originates in the earth’s crust.
However, American researchers have noticed that many volcanoes have their roots between 20 and 30 km below the surface of the Earth, a depth where the magma is not fed by water but rather by carbon dioxide, a gas Greenhouse effect.
