[Reporter Xu Jian/Comprehensive Report]An international study shows that women who drink sugary drinks every day have a greater risk of developing liver cancer and chronic liver disease.

The international study, led by Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts, USA, studied nearly 100,000 postmenopausal women, with participants followed for a median of more than 20 years. Fox reported on August 12 that the findings were recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A total of 98,786 postmenopausal women were included in the final analysis. The study finally found that women who drank one or more sugary drinks per day had an 85% higher risk of developing liver cancer and an 85% higher risk of dying from chronic liver disease than women who drank less than three sugary drinks per month. The risk is 68% higher.

According to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, regarding 65 percent of U.S. adults drink sugary drinks on a daily basis.

The study’s authors noted that the study was observational, might not infer causality, and relied on self-reported responses regarding intake, sugar content, and outcomes.

More research is needed to verify this risk association and determine why sugar-sweetened beverages appear to increase the risk of liver cancer and disease, the researchers said, and to clarify potential risks by integrating genetic, preclinical and experimental studies, and omics data. mechanism.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an association between sugar-sweetened beverage intake and mortality from chronic liver disease,” said lead author Longgang Zhao of the Brigham’s Channing Division of Medicine The findings, if confirmed, may inform public health strategies to reduce the risk of liver disease, they said in a statement. ◇
